2004 Audi A4 CVT Transmission Problems
2004 Audi A4 CVT Transmission Problems
Several transmission problems have been reported by the 2004 Audi A4 owners to date; some of them are discussed herein.
Issues with TCM
Some of the customers have reported issues with 2004 Audi A4 FWD 1.8t CVT transmission, pertaining to its Transmission Control Module. There has been a strong need to replace these modules in cases of severe problems, while on other occasions, taking off the tail housing helped to a good extent.
However, on a number of cases, the TCM had to be recalibrated or had to be even replaced completely in case of severe persistent trouble.
Replacing the TCM
Some of the frustrated buyers decide to resort to the second option, while those with higher tolerance level have tried their luck with removal of tail housing and recalibration of TCM, if needed.
The 2004 Audi A4 CVT transmission problems haven’t been too severe to discourage the potential buyers from buying it right away, though those who’ve faced such issues have had a hard time resolving the same.

Dear Sir/Madam
Re: Fault Code 17090 (Zero one J Transmission Fault F125 transmission sensor) Vin/Chassis WAUZZZ8E05A004579 Engine No. BDV 108339
I have owned the above Audi for less than 6 years and to date it has done 84,236km. Over the years I have conscientiously had the car serviced when required and have only used premium fuel since its purchase. Prior to the fault occurring I was very happy with this car. I am totally flabbergasted that an Audi with such low mileage now requires me to replace the transmission control module. As you will appreciate I am extremely disappointed and concerned what other major fault can I expect if the current fault has occurred within a short period of it being driven.
I have been informed by a Mercedes/ Audi specialist that the fault that has occurred in my car is not a mechanical failure due to old oil but has occurred to a component which is a sealed electronic control module which does not require the said transmission oil to operate i.e. there is no nexus between the lack of transmission oil change (as Audi would have you to believe) and the failure of the sealed electronic component. The sealed transmission range sensor is not something that is or can be serviced at any of the scheduled services.
It will cost me approx. $4500 to have this repaired – this has been quoted by an Audi dealer. Doesn’t say much for the Audi product – supposed to be one of the top European model cars in Australia!
I am interested in hearing from people who have encountered the same problem.

Hi there, I own a 2004 audi a4 and am noticing a slipping when the car changes gears in automatic mode. is this the same thing that you noticed? I am concerned as I just spent $5000 in the last year on the car. I now have 145,000 km on it.
Any info you could provide me would be appreciated.
Thanks,
